Batmen captures three men moving through the crowd dressed as different interpretations of the familiar masked superhero, their costumes and individual personalities transforming an ordinary London street into something almost cinematic.
Photographed from a low viewpoint, the central figure dominates the frame while the two figures either side create an unlikely trio. What initially feels playful also speaks to one of Carnival’s enduring qualities — the freedom to perform, transform and temporarily become someone else.
The photograph forms part of Wayne Crichlow’s long-term documentation of Notting Hill Carnival and is featured in Carnival of Resistance, the book created with Wayne Campbell exploring Carnival through culture, community, heritage and resistance.
Batmen was also published by The Voice as one of a selection of exclusive photographs marking the 60th anniversary of Notting Hill Carnival.
