Dancing Boys
Some of the most memorable moments in documentary photography are those that unfold without warning.
Dancing Boys was photographed in 2018 during my visit to Concordia, a township overlooking Knysna on South Africa's Garden Route.
I had arrived in South Africa with my family for a wedding. What began as curiosity about a settlement visible from our guest house became an unexpected two-day encounter with a community I might otherwise never have visited.
That encounter was made possible by Bongani, the young man managing our guest house, who lived in Concordia and invited me into his community.
As I explored the township, I encountered people going about their everyday lives. Families welcomed me into their homes, neighbours shared their stories, and I witnessed moments of warmth, humour and connection.
Dancing Boys captures one of those moments.
Three young boys, caught up in the simple pleasure of dancing, express themselves with an energy and spontaneity that needs no explanation.
There is something wonderfully universal about the scene. Regardless of geography, language or circumstance, the joy of movement and the freedom of childhood are instantly recognisable.
For me, the photograph also represents something important about the wider series.
Concordia was a place where I witnessed difficult living conditions, but those conditions did not define the people I met.
Their lives contained the same complexity, individuality, humour and humanity that exist in communities everywhere.
This photograph is not about the circumstances in which these boys live. It is about a moment in which they are simply being themselves.
Dancing Boys forms part of Two Days in a Township, a documentary photo essay by Wayne Crichlow exploring an unexpected encounter with the people of Concordia, South Africa.
