The Journey Home

£1,000.00
Limit 1 per order

The celebration continues even after leaving the streets. The Journey Home captures the atmosphere inside a London Underground carriage as Carnival-goers make their way home from Notting Hill Carnival — tired, animated and still carrying the energy of the day with them.

At the centre of the frame, a woman rises between the seats, laughing as she holds onto the carriage pole, while conversations, phones, headphones, Carnival clothing and half-finished drinks fill the scene around her. The confined space of the Underground brings everyone together, turning an everyday journey across London into an extension of Carnival itself.

The photograph is also about what happens beyond the familiar images of the parade and sound systems. Carnival does not simply end when people leave the route. Its energy travels with them — onto platforms, into trains and across the city as thousands of individual journeys home begin.

The photograph forms part of Wayne Crichlow’s long-term documentation of Notting Hill Carnival and is featured in Carnival of Resistance, the book created with Wayne Campbell exploring Carnival through culture, community, heritage and resistance.

The Journey Home has been published by The Guardian and Huck Magazine.
