The Spirit Beneath the Celebration

£500.00
Limit 1 per order

The real spirit of Carnival is often found in the moments that cannot be choreographed. The Spirit Beneath the Celebration captures one of those moments — the energy, connection and spontaneity that exists within the crowd at Notting Hill Carnival.

At the centre of the frame, two Carnival-goers reach towards one another amid the movement of the street. Around them, costumes, flags, music and people compete for space, yet their interaction cuts through the complexity of the scene. One figure stands composed among the crowd while the other appears to almost burst into the frame, creating a moment filled with movement and joy.

The photograph reflects Wayne Crichlow’s approach to documenting Carnival from within: looking beyond the spectacle of the parade to the gestures, encounters and fleeting moments that reveal the people who create its atmosphere.

The photograph forms part of Wayne Crichlow’s long-term documentation of Notting Hill Carnival and the wider body of work explored in Carnival of Resistance, the book created with Wayne Campbell exploring Carnival through culture, community, heritage and resistance.

The Spirit Beneath the Celebration has been published by The Guardian, Street Photography Magazine and Huck Magazine.
