Video Call
A moment of connection within the intensity of Notting Hill Carnival. Video Call captures a woman seated at street level, phone held aloft, sharing the joy she is experiencing as the celebration continues around her. The frame is crowded with fragments of people, movement, colour and detail, yet her gesture creates an intimate moment within the wider scene.
The photograph plays with the contrast between the physical experience of Carnival and the way that experience can be shared beyond the street. Surrounded by the energy of the crowd, she is fully present in the moment while simultaneously inviting someone elsewhere to experience a little of that joy with her.
The photograph forms part of Wayne Crichlow’s long-term documentation of Notting Hill Carnival and is featured in Carnival of Resistance, the book created with Wayne Campbell exploring Carnival through culture, community, heritage and resistance.
Video Call has been published by The Guardian, The Voice, Huck Magazine and 10 Magazine.
