The Bus Stop was made during Wayne Crichlow's early years of street photography, when he would regularly walk through London after finishing work in the City, photographing the everyday moments he encountered along the way.
Here, a brightly illuminated bus shelter becomes a stage within the darkness of the surrounding street. A woman walks away pulling a suitcase. Another figure appears within the shelter, while people move through the background.
But what is actually happening?
One interpretation offered to Wayne was that the woman was leaving the man behind. Perhaps she is. Perhaps the two people have no connection at all.
That ambiguity is what gives The Bus Stop its intrigue. Several possible stories seem to occupy the same frame, leaving the viewer to decide what they are seeing.
Made during a formative period in Wayne's photographic practice, The Bus Stop formed part of the portfolio he submitted during his application to Sky Arts' Master of Photography, where he went on to become a finalist in Series 3 in 2018.
Offered as a limited fine-art edition of 15, each print is individually signed and numbered by Wayne Crichlow and supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity.
