The Face in the Crowd was made during Wayne Crichlow's early years of street photography, almost a decade ago, as he began experimenting with slower shutter speeds and movement as part of his developing visual style.
Photographed handheld at night, the image captures the restless movement of people through the city. Figures appear, disappear and blur into one another, while a suited man carrying his briefcase emerges from the crowd — present within the movement, yet somehow isolated from it.
The slow shutter transforms an everyday street scene into something more ambiguous. Faces become fleeting impressions and bodies dissolve into motion, creating a sense of the pace and anonymity of city life.
For Wayne, The Face in the Crowd represents an early exploration of a technique he would continue to develop: using movement not simply as an effect, but as a way of directing attention and isolating particular figures within a busy frame.
Made during a formative period in Wayne's photographic practice, The Face in the Crowd formed part of the portfolio he submitted during his application to Sky Arts' Master of Photography, where he went on to become a finalist in Series 3 in 2018.
Offered as a limited fine-art edition of 15, each print is individually signed and numbered by Wayne Crichlow and supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity.
